This week in San Diego an F-18 attempting to land at MCAS Miramar on one engine was thrown into a flat spin that the pilot claimed he couldn’t control or correct when he lost his remaining engine.

It got me wondering. What would be the mechanics behind such an uncorrectable spin, and what would be necessary to pull out of such a spin?

If you could dumb the answer down to the lowest possible denominator I would appreciate it, I have a very basic understanding of physic.

The LA Times reports that the Marine Corps has announced that the F/A-18D that lost an engine over the Pacific and lost another over the University City neighborhood of San Diego was ordered to perform a tail hook landing at MCAS Miramar. I’m concerned that the fact that he was attempting to perform a tail hook landing, which may have a shallower glide slope than a standard fighter jet landing, may have made is harder for him to avoid hitting the populated area west of Miramar in the case that he lost the second engine.

Is it the case that at the same distance from the point of wheels-down a tail-hook landing has the airplane lower in altitude?

I will be going to the Miramar Air show this year for the first time. I hear it is the biggest and best air show. I was looking into buying the Observation Deck Chalet seats and was wondering if anyone did that and if it is worth it. A decent price with seating in and outside of the tent. How crowded does it get in that area? If not then maybe box seats would be worth it. Let me know.
